Zero down and sign and drive car leases

"Zero down" and "sign and drive" sound the same and are not. Zero down usually means no down payment, but you still pay the first month and the fees at signing. Sign and drive, or zero due at signing, means those are rolled into the payments too, so you pay nothing on the day.

Either way the car costs the same: what you do not pay at signing, you pay in the monthly. Here is how to compare them, and the offers with the least due at signing that we have live.

What is due at signing

Due at signing is everything paid on day one: the first payment, the lender's acquisition fee, the dealer's documentation fee, registration, tax on anything paid up front, any down payment and our concierge fee. All of it is inside that one number, not added on top. Tax and registration depend on where the car is registered, and every number is confirmed in writing before you sign.

Compare by the true monthly cost

Add what is due at signing to the payments over the whole term and divide by the number of months. That is the true monthly cost, and it is how we put our own offers in order, so a low payment with a large amount due at signing does not look cheaper than it is.

Why less down is often safer on a lease

A down payment on a lease only lowers the payments; you do not build ownership with it. If the car is stolen or written off early, the insurance and gap cover settle what is owed to the lender, and a down payment is generally not returned to you. Keeping cash in hand and taking a slightly higher payment protects you from that.

Who gets the best zero down offers

The strongest lease programs, and the ones with nothing due at signing, usually go to applicants with strong credit. If yours is still building, tell us: we will say plainly what the lenders will approve and what it costs.

Questions

Is a $0 down lease really $0?

Not always. "$0 down" usually means no down payment, but the first month and the fees are still due at signing. Ask for "zero due at signing" if you want to pay nothing on the day, and check the monthly it gives you.

What is a sign and drive lease?

A lease with nothing due at signing: the first payment, the fees and the tax are rolled into the monthly payments. You sign and drive away without paying anything that day.

Should I put money down on a lease?

Usually as little as you can. A down payment only lowers the payments, and if the car is written off early it is generally not returned. Compare offers by the true monthly cost instead.

Do I need good credit for a zero down lease?

The best zero down programs usually go to strong credit. Tell us where yours stands and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
